Humanscale Diffrient World Task Chair By Neils Diffrient
According to Humanscale, one of the world’s leading designer and manufacturers of ergonomic products, “a healthy worker is a productive worker”. As pioneers of office ergonomics since the 1980’s they have aimed to improve the health and comfort of work life through creating active, intelligent workspaces that encourage positive productivity from the individuals working within them.
Abiding by the philosophy that good design achieves more with less, Humanscale are driven by 4 key factors: function, simplicity, longevity and sustainability. This ethos has led to designs that inspire movement and support the user in every posture.
Humanscale are renowned for their collaboration with famed American industrial designer, Neils Diffrient; both parties being driven not only by innovation, but a firm belief that products should fit the form and function for which people use them. Beginning in 1998 this successful partnership resulted in some of the most ground-breaking seating designs of our time: the Freedom, the Liberty, the Diffrient World and the Diffrient Smart chairs.
Starting out as an architect, Diffrient’s career gradually evolved into industrial design. Working with revered designers such as Eero Saarinen and Charles Eames he was instrumental in the mid-century modern design movement, but it has been said that he revolutionized the world of furniture design through his focus on the human experience. This passion and curiosity for the human condition and how it relates to design, is reflected through his pieces, each of them indicating a deep understanding of how people live, work and interact with their environments. He once commented, ‘‘The best way to know what people want and need is not by asking them, but by understanding them.”
The Humanscale Diffrient World Task Chair is a prime example of Diffrient’s belief that chairs should adjust to the user (not the other way around) and is the ultimate user-friendly sitting experience. The unique design eliminates the need for traditional mechanisms, instead using the laws of physics and the sitter’s body weight to offer the perfect recline for each individual. It also features armrests that are attached to the back of the chair so they move with the user for ergonomic comfort, and a tri-panel mesh backrest that provides superior support. The lightweight design and aesthetic are indicative of Diffrient's and Humanscale’s’ reputations for solving functional problems as simply and elegantly as possible, resulting in honest, timeless forms.
